From the M1 the road climbs up past the Hellaby industrial estate at Junction 2 and then on up to the summit in a cutting, then drops down a long descent to the Junction 3 with the A1(M). The Junction with the A1(M) has the M18 on a Viaduct over the A1, with the Interchange between them. From here the road drops down to Dual 2 lane standard.

The section from J4 to J5 is built on a low Embankment that floats on the soft former marsh land, with the road undulating up and down. There are several large distribution depots built along this section of road.

The Road crosses the River Ouse on a Steep Viaduct, to give clearance as the river is navigable up stream as far as ?. The road then drops down to merge with the M62.
